Sushi!!
Brian and I went to Saburo yesterday night for sushi. It was so yummy! We got there at 6:45 and had to stand outside in the freezing cold for an hour before we got seated at the tiny table right next to the door with waiting people's asses in our face, but it was totally worth it. The. Best. Sushi. Ever. End of story. Then we went to the Galaxy to celebrate Justen's birthday. Whoops! Sam's awake. Gotta go!

Culinary Genuis part deux
We are having a nice mellow weekend. Yesterday we barely left the house. I made faux sausage biscuits and gravy, with that soysage, which is my new favorite product. I have never had real biscuits and gravy before, it just looked like a heart attack on a plate, you know? but the veggie version was pretty good, and got rave reviews from Jeff.
Today Samwise is officially 2 months old. He is a BIG baby! but he is doing all the things he should be doing, and I think he is brilliant! He laughs and rolls over and is alert and sucks his fingers. This morning when I was making breakfast we rocked around the kitchen, and he fell asleep to Run DMC's "It's Tricky"
Today we are also going to take turns going through the line at Fred Meyer as many times as we can because there are in store $5 off coupons for our formula, and that is a great deal, but its only one per customer. I guess it IS tricky.

I am a Vegan Culinary Genius
So I was watching Alton Browns' "Good Eats" the other day, and he was messing around with wonton skins. I enjoy a good potsticker, but how to replicate at home for picky vegan husband? Genius- soy sausage instead of pork!!
To make these you will need:
1 tube of vaguely disturbing soy sausage crumbles, "gimme lean" by lightlife is the brand I used
a few teaspoons of chopped ginger, garlic, and serrano peppers
minced green onions (I omitted these for Brian but the next time I make them I will add them
saute all of that in vegetable oil, sesame oil and red chili oil
add soy sauce, white or rice vinegar, and a pinch of sugar to taste.
Cool this mixture, and then put it by scant teaspoons in wonton skins. I experimented with shapes, Ill post pictures after I fry them in 360 degree oil for 5 minutes!
serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
I am making these, along with edamole (guacamole like substance made with edamame instead of avocado from a recipe in Cooking Light Magazine,) crudites and velveeta cheese dip (!!, right? ) for the Blazers- Celtics game that me, Jeff, Brian, Justen and Sam will be watching later. I know the game started at 4:30, but due to the oft lauded wonders of DVR game time is 6:30.
Cheers!

Sad Sam
Sam is a baby that does not like to :
a) be naked or
b) wait for a bottle. In this picture he was doing both. Poor baby. But kind of funny and cute in a pathetic way. He gets really mad!!
On a positive note, I put him down to sleep at 8:30 last night and he did not wake up once until 2:30! That's 6 hours, folks! Every night I try a new blanket to swaddle him with and he manages to wriggle out of every one. Last night I used a bigger blanket, but still thin enough so he would not overheat. Bingo! He really is starting to get on some kind of sleeping routine!!

Dr. Karp is my best friend!
We had been having trouble getting Sam to sleep at night for more than 2 hours at a time. He swings his little arms around like a conductor, not only punching me in the face, but waking himself up. So while we were at the mall the other day, I picked up his book "The Happiest Baby on the Block," which recommended the 5 s's technique, involving swaddling, shushing, sideways, swinging and sucking. Imagine my surprise when 2 minutes of this turned my squalling baby into a peaceful sleeper. He is still like Houdini at night, magically worming his way out of the tightest swaddles, but he sleeps a 5 hour stretch, and then a 3 hour stretch, and then I put him in his swing (Dr. Karp recommends the highest setting) until he wakes up for good, while I frantically gather things together for the day.
Prison Break tonight!! Although I will have to wait until Wednesday to watch.

Spoiler Alert
eliza - vanautu
jonathan - cook islands
yau-man - fiji
johnny fairplay - pearl islands
james - china
ami - vanuatu
ozzy - cook islands
amanda - china
parvati - cook islands
cirie - exile island
I heard this was the "favorites" part of the next Survivor-"Fans vs Favorites." Go Ami!! Where is Guatemala and Palau represented? Little Ian the dolphin trainer? I loved him!! And doesn't whats her face- Stephanie- deserve another go?
Yesterday at the mall, Sam was alert and smiling for about 6 hours, looking over my shoulder and grinning at the passers-by. He did not do so well in Target today- we put him in his stroller and he started to cry, and then the minute I picked him up he fell asleep on my chest. I guess all that sleeping though breakfast wore him out!
My sister Mandi got a dog named Bandit. She is Sam's new cousin and pictures will follow.
Every single prom dress on Project Runway last week was ugly. I could have designed a better one!! The next challenge sounds fun, though.

Sorry
I know, it's been so long, but every time I get a quiet moment that I could potentially blog, I realize that I could be throwing in a load of laundry, cleaning something, taking a shower, or taking a much needed nap! It's hard to believe my little baby is 7 weeks old! He is growing up so fast- as of the last doctors appointment he was almost 13 pounds, and 24 inches long!
We have been doing our best to get out of the house- our favorite thing lately is going to the mall and watching the ice skaters. It keeps us off the street, and Sam is fascinated by the people and the lights. He also naps in his stroller and I bring a book and enjoy scenery other than the food network. We also went to a mommy matinee yesterday with my friend Molly and her baby Henry. I could not believe how good Sam was- we both pretty much napped through the whole movie- "The Darjeeling Limited."
We love going to the mall because everyone always looks in the stroller and says "what a beautiful baby", which of course is true. I fantasize about a talent scout giving me his card at the mall so that Sam can embark on a career a la Olsen twins!
Sam can now smile, gurgle, and roll over! He is so smart, and also starting to look more like his father every day.
My next post will be all about tv. I have the spoiler list for the favorites on the next "Survivor", so if you don't want to know, don't read my blog tomorrow. Also, how about those freaking Portland Trailblazers, huh?
Alright, I don't want to burn out all at once.

Happy New Year
Oh my it's been so long since I posted I barely remember how, and now I am overwhelmed (or maybe just whelmed, like Michael Scott) because so much has happened since last post I don't know where to start.
Orleans was lovely, Sam loved being the center of attention and his cousins Sinead, Geena and Josa were excellent babysitters! I know Sam can't wait to spend more time with them! I was just happy to be somewhere beautiful with family. I read alot, did crossword puzzles, and generally hung out. We left a day early because it had started snowing, and I am a bit neurotic. Turns out the drive would have been a whole lot easier had we waited one more day, but then I would have spent the whole day stressed out, and I was really looking forward to being home in my own (sofa) bed.
Sam is up! Ill post more later! It's probably less painful this way anyway.
